Psychiatry is medical care for mental health. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD) who begins with a thorough evaluation. This includes reviewing your current symptoms, personal and family mental health history, physical health, and any medications or supplements you take. This full picture helps the psychiatrist make a diagnosis and build a treatment plan, which may include prescribing and managing medication, recommending therapy, or both.
Therapy is talking with a trained professional, like a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), to understand and work through what you're facing, whether that's anxiety, depression, stress, relationship challenges, or a major life change. Therapists can assess and diagnose mental health conditions, and sessions focus on building coping skills, gaining insight, and making changes that support your well-being. If medication might help, your therapist can refer you to a psychiatrist and coordinate care with them.
